Interview with Rufus Bradshaw
You founded Alchemy in 2006 – nearly 20 years ago. What drove you to start your own business rather than work within an established gym or corporate fitness structure, and how has your entrepreneurial journey shaped your approach to client service?
My approach to achieving results in health and wellbeing has always been the same; I like to delve into the character assets of my client and build programming around that. Alongside this, we weed out their defects. Too much time and effort, in my experience, is spent on exercise and nutritional education and not enough on mindset. What's the client's why? What transferable skills do they have that can be applied to looking and feeling better? Most people know what to do; it's creating the momentum and desire to get going that yields discipline, which in turn leads to results.
Your client roster spans business leaders, celebrities, and professional athletes – three groups with very different demands. How do you tailor your approach for a CEO preparing for an Ironman versus a professional athlete in their competitive season versus a celebrity facing constant public scrutiny?
Everything starts with a thorough assessment. I never put words in the client's mouth. It's imperative that when they outline their goals and targets, it 100% comes from them. Certain things will be discussed, but once agreed upon, we go to the programming phase. I'll then tell them what is required to hit their goal in the timeframe agreed upon. If they sign it off, then that becomes our contract. We've agreed between ourselves this is what needs to be done. They give me the why and I give them the how. There invariably can be ongoing negotiations as to how we apply the "how," but ultimately if the contract is not upheld, the whole process falls apart. This approach is transferable to high achievers, sports people, and anyone else for that matter. The key is to assess in depth both their physical and mental capabilities.
- Hard work, consistency, and the understanding that one bad day doesn't ruin progress
- Mindset as the most powerful asset in any transformation journey
- Bespoke programming built on thorough assessment and contractual commitment
- Integration of postural work, corrective exercises, and flexibility into every routine
Your philosophy states, "I demand commitment and hard work, reciprocating with 110% effort." In today's market, where many businesses prioritise customer appeasement, how has maintaining such high standards impacted your business model, and have you ever turned clients away?
I'm unwavering. I learnt many years ago that the best way to get respect was to know your product and not be afraid of having difficult conversations. Again, I refer back to the assessment. I'll quite often verbalise to a client that I'm asking them to adhere to the agreement we put in place on day one. I like the challenge of unlocking a resistant client, but if there is a lack of work ethic or interest, I have often articulated to the client that it's not working. Seven out of ten times they apply themselves more. The other three out of ten ultimately found the pain of change harder than the pain of staying the same. It does happen.
With over 20 years at the profession's pinnacle, you've witnessed enormous changes in the fitness industry – from fads to technology to wellness trends. What principles have remained constant in your methodology, and what have you deliberately chosen to evolve?
Our methodology hasn't changed in these key areas: the backbone of people's success is hard work, consistency, and an understanding that one bad day doesn't ruin progress. A negative mindset to one bad day invariably leads to two bad days, et cetera – and that's what ruins progress. Like most things in life, mindset is your most powerful asset.
In terms of evolving, we are big on integrating postural work, corrective exercises, and flexibility work into our routines. I think also nutritional misinformation is something that we are constantly having to fight. For us, the formula is the same: natural foods, avoid all hidden sugars, drink a minimum of two litres of water daily, work on the 80/20 philosophy – be good 80% and the other 20% indulge. If this is adhered to, you will achieve a fit and healthy physique.
Consistent training sessions lead to improved eating, which leads to improved physiological state, brain function, and suppression of stress. It's all-encompassing.
— Rufus Bradshaw
The concept of "alchemy" – transformation and change – is central to your brand. Beyond physical transformation, what role do you believe fitness and health play in overall business performance, athletic excellence, and leadership capability?
This is such an important question for the clients and me. It's more a question of what it doesn't help with. Consistent training sessions lead to improved eating, which leads to improved physiological state, brain function, and suppression of stress. It's all-encompassing. From my understanding, meditation is the ability to slow down your thoughts. Believe me, when we're putting you through your paces, the last thing you're thinking about is that unpaid invoice or some other situation that you constantly worry about but can't control. It's an hour off from your head. Training and healthy eating build discipline, integrity, self-worth, sharpness, and so much more. I'll know when a client becomes fully invested – when their exercise is an unwavering part of their weekly routine.
Looking ahead, what does the next chapter of Alchemy look like? Are there untapped opportunities in the elite fitness market, or new ways you're planning to serve your high-profile clientele whilst maintaining the bespoke, results-driven approach that's defined your success?
We are in the process of looking for a larger facility. My goal is to open a 360 fitness and wellbeing centre by 2028, which will include a physio, sports therapy, yoga and Pilates rooms, and a dietician. This will enable us to prescribe truly unique and bespoke training and eating plans that reflect our desire to push the Gold Standard of personal training.
